ACTS
2:14-36
The Model
Church - Lesson #5
In our text
a huge crowd was ready to hear a sermon.
They had
questions, having witnessed the speaking in foreign languages by those who were
incapable of doing so.
Peter
describes to the crowd what they had just witnessed. He gives them answers.
EXPLANATION
OF PENTECOST - Vss. 14-21
Vs. 14 - Peter stood and requested that they listen.
Vs. 15 - Peter quickly dismissed the charges of drunkenness.
It was only 9:00 A.M. Too early!
I wonder if that argument would
hold today?
Vs. 16 - Peter's explanation comes right out of the Old
Testament. God used the prophet Joel to
explain what would happen in what is called "The Last Days." Joel
2:28-32
Vs. 17 - According to the Bible we are in the last days. 1
John 2:18, 1 Peter 1:20, Hebrews 1:1-2
The last
days are almost 2,000 years old.
One of the
features of the last days was that God would pour out His Spirit.
This is
what happened at Pentecost, God poured out His Spirit.
Now, not
all of what Peter quotes here has taken place.
The greater part of Joel's prophecy is yet to be filled.
Vss. 19 - The Day of the Lord is a Day of Judgment
The Book of Revelation verifies
that the things mentioned here will occur during the
Tribulation period. Revelation
8:7-8, Revelation 9:1-3
Vs. 20 - Our Lord verified that this would happen in The
Olivet Discourse. Matthew 24:29-30
Vs. 21 - I personally think that this verse is the reason
why Peter quotes so much of Joel, even covering things which haven't happened
yet.
So, Peter
is saying that in the Last Days the Holy Spirit would come. And on the Day of Pentecost the Spirit did
come. Now Peter goes on to explain why
the Spirit came when He did.
EXECUTION
OF JESUS - Vss. 22-23
Vs. 22 - The works of the Lord Jesus were well known.
Through Him God worked "miracles, wonders, and signs."
Vs. 23 - In spite of all the positive proof which Jesus gave
for being the Messiah, the Jewish people rejected Him and wicked people
crucified Him.
This,
however was all part of God's plan. It
was planned by God that Jesus would die for our sins.
Man was
still guilty because he was a willing participant. Isaiah made God's plan very
clear.
Isaiah
53:3-6
EXIT FROM
THE GRAVE - Vss. 24-32
Vss. 25-28
is a quote of Psalm 16:8-11
EXALTATION
OF CHRIST -Vss. 33-35
Psalm 110:1 - The Lord said
unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy
footstool.
EXCLAMATION
OF CHRIST'S LORDSHIP - Vs. 36
