Why do we Christians fail to trust God when we should?
At a time when the Hebrew
Christians were having their faith challenged, the author of Hebrews reminds
them that God can be trusted in Hebrews 6:13-20.
Hebrews 6:12 tells them,
“That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience
inherit the promises.” He follows this verse up with the example of Abraham who
discovered that God can be trusted.
ü Who was Abraham? What were God’s initial promises to Him?
Genesis 12:1-3 - Now the
Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred,
and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew
thee: [2] And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and
make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: [3] And I will bless them
that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and
in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
ü Abraham had many
challenges in his life. But the biggest
challenge was offering up Isaac as a sacrifice. Genesis 22:1-14
ü After Abraham had
successfully passed the test, God made the promise found here in Vs. 14.
Genesis 22:15-18 - And the
angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, [16] And
said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this
thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: [17] That in blessing I
will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of
the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall
possess the gate of his enemies; [18] And in thy seed shall all the nations of
the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
ü In what ways has
Abraham’s seed been multiplied?
ü How have all the nations
been blessed?
Galatians 3:8-9 - And the
scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith,
preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In
thee shall all nations be blessed. [9] So then they which be
of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
