John 12:1-8

STATEMENTS

 

Jesus had risen Lazarus from the dead.

There is a meal in Bethany.

The characters in this story make statements, either by their words or their actions.

 

STATEMENTS OF DEVOTION Vss. 1-3

Martha served Jesus. Vs. 2

Lazarus had fellowship with Jesus Vs. 2

Mary spent for Jesus. Vs. 3

 

STATEMENT OF DECEIT Vss. 4-6

Judas appeared to be very dedicated.  He said that the money could have been spent to help the poor. Although he sounded good, in reality he was a thief, and wanted the money for himself.

 

STATEMENT OF DEFENSE Vss. 7-8

Jesus understood the heart of Mary.

He also understood the significance of the act. She was anointing him for burial.

The poor would always be with the church.  But Jesus was only going to be present for a precious short time.

GUESS WHO CAME TO DINNER?

 

Any dinner party has a variety of guests with a variety of backgrounds.  This dinner held after the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead had a variety of people involved. These people will teach us many lessons. There was:

 

MARTHA, WHO SERVED - SHE WAS FAITHFUL - Vs. 2

 

LAZARUS, WHO SAT - HE HAD FELLOWSHIP - Vs. 2

 

MARY, WHO SHARED - SHE WAS FERVENT (IN HER DEVOTION) - Vs. 3

 

JUDAS, WHO STOLE - HE WAS A FAKE - Vss. 4-6

 

JESUS, WHO SAVED - HE IS FANTASTIC! - Vss. 7-8

Mary understood that Jesus was going to die. She anointed Him in anticipation of what was going to happen. Jesus went to the cross to die for our sins. Faith in Him brings eternal life. John 3:16

John 12:23-33

LOOKING TO CALVARY

 

Time was short. Jesus knew why He was in Jerusalem.  He was there to die for our sins.  Here is an explanation of what would happen at Calvary.

 

THE CROSS Vss. 23-24

Jesus would be glorified through His death.

 

THE COST Vss. 25-26

True disciples would follow Jesus' example and lose their lives for His sake.

 

THE CONVERSATION Vss. 27-28

Jesus asks the Father to glorify His name.

The Father answers, assuring that He had and would again.

 

THE CONCLUSION Vss. 29-33

The conclusion of the matter was that if Jesus was "lifted up" on the cross, He would draw all men to Himself.

TRUE DISCIPLESHIP

 

The only way to Heaven is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. John 14:6, John 3:36, 1 John 5:11-13

A person who is truly saved is a disciple of Jesus Christ. A true follower of Christ will demonstrate in his life that true discipleship:

 

IS A MATTER OF DEATH - Vs. 24 - Luke 9:23, 14:27, Galatians 2:20

 

IS A MATTER OF DEVOTION - Vs. 25 - Luke 14:26

 

IS A MATTER OF DIRECTION - Vs. 26 - Luke 9:23

John 12:27-33 

A PUBLIC, INTIMATE CONVERSATION

 

THE SON’S DESIRE – Vss. 27-28 – “Glorify thy name.”

 

THE FATHER’S DECLARATION – Vss. 28-30 – “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

 

THE DEVIL’S (or SATAN’S) DEFEAT – Vss. 31-33 – “…now shall the prince of this world be cast out.”
