FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS

The disciples followed the Lord's directions for "Palm Sunday".

We should follow the Lord's directions because:

THE LORD'S DIRECTIONS ARE SPECIFIC - Vss. 1-3

Jesus told the disciples where to go, what to do, and what to say.

Through the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we too will receive specific instructions. Romans 12:2, John 16:12-14, Psalm 32:8

THE LORD'S DIRECTIONS ARE SCRIPTURAL - Vss. 4-5

Jesus was out to fulfill Scripture and to do God's will. John 4:34, 9:4, Matthew 5:18

We should do the same! Mark 13:31

THE LORD'S DIRECTIONS ARE SURE - Vss. 6-7

The disciples found things to be just as Jesus told them. We count on God's directions as accurate. Mark 11:1-6

THE LORD'S DIRECTIONS ARE SPECIAL - Vss. 8-11

Because Jesus directions were followed the disciples were part of a great day and a day when God's word was fulfilled.  Whenever we follow God's directions, the results will be special. Sinners will be challenged and saved. Saints will be edified.

Matthew 21:1-11

PALM SUNDAY

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DISCIPLES Vss. 1-3

They were to go and do exactly as they were told.

As modern day disciples, this is still our responsibility.

THE REASON FOR THE INSTRUCTIONS Vss. 4-5

God's Word would be fulfilled if the disciples obeyed.

Fulfilling God's will is the best reason in the world for obeying God. After all, God's will is "good, acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2)

THE RESPONSE OF OBEDIENCE Vss. 6-7

Here is a great compliment here.

The disciples do exactly as they were told.

May this also be our response to God's directions.

THE REACTION OF THE CROWD Vss. 8-11

They gave to Jesus adoration and praise.

We should do the same! See Revelation 4:11

GOOD DISCIPLES

Matthew 21:1-11

We hear much about the faults of the disciples, especially before Pentecost.  However, there were many times that the disciples did say and do the right things.  In the Palm Sunday story, please some of the qualities of good disciples.

1. Ears to listen. Vss. 1-5

2. Feet to go. Vs. 6a

3. Will to obey. Vs. 6b-7

4. Possessions to share. Vss. 7-8

5. Lips to proclaim. Vss. 9-11

Matthew 21:3 etc.

THE LORD HATH NEED

And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.

Technically, as God, Jesus doesn't really need anything. He's self-sufficient.  But the Lord has chosen to need things.

THE LORD NEEDED A DONKEY - Matthew 21:1-5

He needed the donkey in order to fulfill prophecy.

THE LORD NEEDS DESTITUTE MEN - Luke 8:26-39

Here was a man who was in terrible shape due to the influence of demons. Vs. 27

The Lord healed him by casting out the demons. Vss. 30-33

The man was transformed. Vs. 35

The man wanted to follow Jesus, but Jesus sent him back to his own people as a testimony.

The Lord still needs men and women who were destitute, who have found deliverance in the Lord Jesus to testify for Him. Psalm 107:2, 1 Peter 3:15

THE LORD NEEDS DANGEROUS MEN - ACTS 9:1-16

Paul (Saul) was dangerous.  He persecuted the early church. Vss. 1-2

Jesus confronted Paul and Paul was converted. Vss. 3-9

Jesus had great plans of usefulness for this once dangerous man. Vss. 10-16

There are men and women today who were once dangerous, who are now used of God to further the Gospel. Ephesians 2:8-10, Matthew 28:19-20

THE LORD NEEDS DEVOTED MEN - Luke 9:23-24, Luke 14:26-27

Devoted men and women are needed to live for Christ.  There is a high cost for devotion, as these Scriptures indicate.

TEMPLE TALK

This is the story of Jesus cleansing the temple.

Each believer is the temple of God. The Holy Spirit dwells inside of us. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Often, we need the same cleansing that Jesus gave the temple in Jerusalem.

GOD'S PURPOSE - A HOUSE OF PRAYER

There should be a worship center inside of each of us! We are the ones who are to praise and to pray. We should always do God's will. Ephesians 5:18-21, 6:18

OUR PROBLEM - A DEN OF THIEVES

We have allowed other things to rob God of the preeminence that He should have in our lives.

Proverbs 6:16-19, Colossians 3:5-11

JESUS' PROMINENCE - A TEMPLE CLEANSED

Jesus removed that which was offensive from the Jerusalem temple.

If allowed prominence in our lives, Jesus will cleanse our temples too. 1 John 1:9

Matthew 21:12-16

SPRING CLEANING

This is the time of the year when many housewives scrub away the dirt of winter with the spring cleaning of their homes.  Jesus performed a "spring cleaning" of His own with the cleansing of the temple.  We should be willing to let Him perform a spring cleaning in our lives.

JESUS' PRESENCE - Vs. 12a

JESUS' PROMINENCE - Vs. 12b

JESUS' PROCLAMATION - Vs. 13

JESUS' POWER - Vs. 14

THE LEADERS' PROBLEM - Vss. 15-16

*********************************************************

Matthew 21:12-16

ROYAL ACTIONS

Jesus arrived as Israel's King.  Although in reality Jesus was rejected at this time, He still acted in a royal way.

THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE KING - Vss. 12-13

The temple was cleansed of those who used religion as a means of crooked gain.

THE REIGN OF THE KING - Vs. 14

This king's authority over disease is shown.

THE REJOICING IN THE KING - Vss. 15-16

The children sang his praise in fulfillment of Scripture. Psalm 8:2

THE REJECTION OF THE KING - Vss. 15-16

The religious leaders saw Jesus' actions and heard the words of the children, and were upset.  They had rejected Jesus as their king.

Mark 11:1-10

LIKE THE COLT

YOU ARE NEEDED - Vss. 1-6

Of course, because God is God, He technically needs nothing.

However, He has chosen to use each of us in ministry. Ephesians 2:10, 1 Peter 4:10-11

He has also chosen us to worship Him. Hebrews 13:15

YOU ARE TO CARRY JESUS - Vs. 7

The colt carried Jesus to Jerusalem and to a multitude of people.

We are to carry Jesus to the multitudes. Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15

YOU ARE TO BE UNDER HIS CONTROL - Vs. 7

The colt was unbroken, but he was "broken" by Jesus.

Jesus wants to break us and have full control of our lives. Romans 12:1, Galatians 2:20

YOU ARE TO BE FORGOTTEN AS CHRIST IS WORSHIPPED - Vss. 8-10

The further the Lord went, the more likely it is, that people forgot the colt.

So it should be with us as well. John the Baptist stated it well when he said, "He must increase, but I must decrease." (John 3:30)

Mark 11:3

NEEDED!

…the Lord hath need of him…

God is self sufficient and has need of nothing.  However, just like Jesus needed the colt to fulfill the prophecies about Palm Sunday, God has chosen to need us.

GOD NEEDS US TO FORGIVE US

2 Corinthians 5:21 - For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Ephesians 1:7 - In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

GOD NEEDS US TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH US

Matthew 28:20 - Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Romans 8:15 - For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

GOD NEEDS US TO BE FAITHFUL TO HIM

1 Corinthians 4:1-2 - Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. [2] Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

GOD NEEDS US FOREVER

Revelation 22:1-5 - And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. [2] In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. [3] And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: [4] And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. [5] And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

WELCOME THE KING

Down through the years people have gone out of their way to welcome those whom they have deemed important.

World championship teams have been welcomed back to the home city with greeters at airports, parades, and rallies in their honor.

Dignitaries and celebrities have been welcomed with ticker tape parades, and have been given "keys to the city".

Royalty has been welcomed with red carpets, official banquets, special tours and great gifts.

Even in our homes, when someone special is coming we make a very special effort to make the person feel welcome.

About 2,000 years ago on what we know as "Palm Sunday",  The city of Jerusalem had a very special visitor.  He had been in the city many times before, but this time He presented Himself in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9.  Not everyone welcome the Lord Jesus with enthusiasm (Luke 19:42-44), but there are those who did.

Jesus, the Messiah, the King of Kings, was made to feel welcome, especially by his disciples. The ways they made Him feel welcome are the same ways true Christians should make Him feel welcome today.

WELCOME THE KING WITH FAITH - Vss. 37-38

The chant of "Blessed be the king that cometh in the name of the Lord..." was begun by those who truly trusted Him, His disciples.

True believers have trusted Christ as Savior by faith. John 3:16-18, Hebrews 11:6

WELCOME THE KING WITH OBEDIENCE - Vss. 29-35

The disciples did as they were told. John 14:15

WELCOME THE KING WITH GIFTS - Vss. 32-36

Jesus received the gift of the loan of a colt.

The disciples gave the gift of their time. Ephesians 5:16

The disciples gave of their resources (Clothes as a saddle and walk way.) 2 Corinthians 9:7, Proverbs 19:17

The disciples gave themselves. Romans 12:1

WELCOME THE KING WITH PRAISE Vss. 37-38
