PSALM 16
2 Outlines
Psalm 16:4-5
DETERMINATION
"Their sorrows
shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood
will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. The LORD is the portion
of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest
my lot."
One of the most
determined people I know is our son Mark.
When he decides he's going to do something it will get done. When he was studying music in college he
discovered that he was using the wrong technique to blow his trumpet. One summer he came home from college and
stopped playing. Then, he slowly started
relearning how to blow his trumpet. By the end of the summer he had learned to
do it correctly. Before he completed his
under graduate studies, he had become "first chair".
When it comes to serving
the Lord we need a good bit of determination. David shows his determination in
our text.
REASON FOR SORROW -
"Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god:"
When people do not serve
the Lord but follow other "gods" they are asking for trouble.
True peace only comes
from commitment to Christ. Matthew 11:28-30, John 14:27
RESOLVE OF FAITHFULNESS
- "their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their
names into my lips."
Even as Christians our
hearts can sway to the worship of activities, things, and people. We must resolve not to act like the unsaved.
RESERVATION FOR THE LORD
- "The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot."
I have reserved the Lord
as the portion of my inheritance and cup.

Psalm 16:11
LIFE AT ITS BEST!
Early one morning I was called out to minister to a
family whose 17 year old son apparently took his own
life. We would be quick to say that he
didn't have life at its best!
There are people who go through life always striving
to get ahead, and seemingly frustrated because they are going nowhere. They do
not have life at its best.
There are others, who in spite of terrible trials and
tribulations, seem to accomplish much in life, and usually seem to be
satisfied. They have discovered life at
its best! Such a life is described in
Psalm 16:11.
THE PATH OF LIFE
There are many roads I can take to get from my home in
THE PRESENCE OF JOY
After salvation, a daily walk in the presence of the
Lord Jesus will bring unending joy and productivity. John 15:1-7, John 12:26,
John 16:24
THE PLEASURES FOR EVERMORE
After this life we continue to live and have a pleasures beyond human comprehension. 1 John 3:1-3,
Revelation 21:1-4
Note: I have often used this verse as a text for a
funeral message.
