GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY
(A Topical Study)
Joshua 14:10-11 - And
now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five
years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of
2 Timothy 4:6-8 - For
I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. [7] I
have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: [8]
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord,
the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto
all them also that love his appearing.
I think that most of us would like to “age” the ways
Caleb and the Apostle Paul did. We would like to “grow old gracefully”. And God would like us to grow old gracefully.
Psalm 90:10 - The
days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength
they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is
soon cut off, and we fly away.
Job 7:6 - My
days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.
Job 9:25 - Now
my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
Psalm 39:4 - Lord,
make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may
know how frail I am.
Psalm 71:17-18 - O
God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy
wondrous works. [18] Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me
not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to
every one that is to come.
Ecclesiastes 12:1-7 - Remember
now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the
years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; [2] While the
sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds
return after the rain: [3] In the day when the keepers of the house shall
tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease
because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, [4]
And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is
low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of
musick shall be brought low; [5] Also when they shall be afraid of that which
is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and
the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to
his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: [6] Or ever the silver
cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the
fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. [7] Then shall the dust return to
the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
1 Peter 3:10-12 - For
he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from
evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: [11] Let him eschew evil, and do
good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. [12] For the eyes of the Lord are over
the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the
Lord is against them that do evil.
Titus 2:1-6 - But
speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: [2] That the aged men be
sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. [3] The aged
women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers,
not given to much wine, teachers of good things; [4] That they may teach the
young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, [5] To
be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands,
that the word of God be not blasphemed. [6] Young men likewise exhort to be
sober minded.
Job 19:25-27 - For
I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon
the earth: [26] And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my
flesh shall I see God: [27] Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall
behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
2 Corinthians 5:8 - We
are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be
present with the Lord.
