Isaiah 41:8 - But
thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my
friend.
For Abraham to be called “The Friend of
God” was a real compliment. It is
unbelievable that God would want our friendship, but he does. Using the life of Abraham, and other
Scriptures, let’s consider what friendship with God means.
FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS PERSONAL
Genesis 15:1-6
Genesis 18:1-15
Proverbs 27:9 - Ointment
and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by
hearty counsel.
Revelation 3:20 - Behold,
I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I
will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS OPEN
Genesis 18:17 - And
the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
John 15:15 - Henceforth
I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I
have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have
made known unto you.
1 Peter 5:7 - Casting
all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS DEPENDABLE
Genesis 18:18-19 - Seeing
that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations
of the earth shall be blessed in him? [19] For I know him, that he will command
his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the
Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that
which he hath spoken of him.
Proverbs 17:17 - A
friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs 18:24 - A
man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh
closer than a brother.
Proverbs 27:6 - Faithful
are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Proverbs 27:10 - Thine
own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's
house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a
brother far off.
John 15:13-14 - Greater
love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. [14]
Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS INTERACTIVE
Genesis 18:22-33
John 15:4-5 - Abide
in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide
in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are
the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much
fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Proverbs 27:17 - Iron
sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
John 15:7 - If
ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it
shall be done unto you.
John 15:16 - Ye
have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go
and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye
shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
Ephesians 6:18 - Praying
always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto
with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
