AMAZING GRACE
What excites you?
Do certain sports teams like the Yankees, Steelers, Red Wings or Celtics excite you?
Do your children or grandchildren excite you?
Do hobbies excite you?
Do strong friendships excite you?
Does eating excite you?
Do “do it yourself” projects excite you?
Does the internet excite you?
There was once a man named John Newton who got excited by the grace of God. He was a former slave trader who lived a life of debauchery who came to faith in Christ and tasted the grace of God for himself. He became a minister of the Gospel and the author of the famous hymn Amazing Grace.
Let’s consider the great truths that are found in this hymn.
THE CONTRASTS OF GRACE
Amazing grace! How sweet
the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
Isaiah 64:6, Ephesians 2:1-3, Ephesians 2:4-5, Ephesians 2:8-9
THE CONVICTION OF GRACE
’Twas grace that taught my
heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
John 16:8-11, Ezekiel 18:4, John 3:16
THE COMFORT OF GRACE
The Lord has promised good
to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
Romans 8:28, Romans 8:35-39, Psalm 28:7
THE CONSISTENCY OF GRACE
Through many dangers,
toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
Psalm 32:8, Psalm 17:15
THE CULMINATION OF GRACE
When we’ve been there ten
thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, Revelation 21:3-4
